This is one of those books that I can't rate in terms of stars, which is usually the case for me where someone is telling their story. I understand why Chai Ling wanted to tell it herself based on her experience with the American media when she realized whether something was true didn't seem to matter. She says " I could not believe it. This was the free media we had worshiped and sacrificed our lives for in Tiananmen? What was the difference between these "independent" reports and the stories in the Communist controlled state newspaper in China. I appreciated how her past experiences and her faith in Jesus have led her to be passionate about helping save China's women from forced abortions. Chai Ling tells her life story highlighting her experience of the student uprising at Tiananmen Square in 1989 as a student leader, her survival and escape as well as her current passion to help end oppression of women and families in China today. The events surrounding 1989 are told in vivid detail, providing a view into the Chinese culture and government of that time. Her current passion to help end the one child policy with its forced abortions raised my level of awareness and interest to learn more.
