About book Havana Nocturne: How The Mob Owned Cuba & Then Lost It To The Revolution (2008)

This is by far one of the most interesting books I've read in a long time. When it comes to the island of Cuba, I've alway known bits and pieces. And Cuba was never discussed in my many years of formal education. Additionally I believe the average American's knowledge of the subject is a compilation of bits and pieces cobbled together from bad news programs, Hollywood movies and equally bad fiction. This book is a detailed "how it took place" from prohibition to Fidel Castro's rise to power. It held my interest from beginning to end. Many have complained that it is too long. But for me the level of detail it what makes it enjoyable.I thoroughly enjoyed the read. T.J. English tells the story of the American Mafia's rise to power and eventual downfall in Cuba. From 1946 to 1959 Meyer Lansky, Lucky Luciano, Santo Trafficante and other mobsters from the mainland were running the show. Castro's revolution brought the good times to a halt on New Year's Day 1959. Plenty of fascinating facts and inside information keep the pages turning.Havana Nocturne brings to mind the last paragraph of George Orwell's Animal Farm. The animals couldn't tell the men from the pigs or the pigs from the men. Gangster-Politician. Politician-Gangster. No difference.A good book for history or gangster buffs.
