I liked this book for the vivid detail and pains taken to be realistic. The only part that was hard to get through were the long, sweeping, psalm-like pages. I appreciate good praise of God like any Christian but there are several sections that are exceptionally repetitive and take away a lot of the meaning from the book. I found myself barely reading those bits to simply get to the meat of what the main character was saying. When I was halfway through this book I asked, What is the point of this story? As biblical fiction I was expecting more and since Nehemiah was only a secondary character I was disappointed. Sarah, a cousin of his, is uncouth and lacks womanly graces and didn't have much going for her except that she is extremely intelligent. She ends up becoming a scribe for the queen who takes a shine towards her. The queen arranges her marriage to a relative of the king, a man named Darius. Neither of them want the marriage and at first are rather rude to each other. At first I was only going to rate this book as a 2 but I decided to be more gracious. I was impressed how Sarah turns to God for help with the pain in her life and develops an inner beauty which also shines on the outside. By the time I was finished I decided I liked the book after all even if it wasn't what I expected. I am not a huge fan of "romance" books but decided it was forgivable. This was an easy read and some of the struggles that Sarah faced I could relate to and I could appreciate her turning to God for help.
