Happenstance isn't sure what to think of someone who is delighted by the magical, often to the point of imperiling himself, and he isn't sure what Lord Umber's interest should be with him.This is a fascinating book. Lord Umber is far more than he appears. He's not just an empty-headed fool who enjoys studying strange creatures without noticing they are trying to kill him (although there is a lot of that), but also a highly nuanced man whose happy demeanor appears to be as much choice as nature. His strong personality and infectious cheer has naturally gathered people around him. The interesting thing is his choice of friends and servants: those that would otherwise be rejected due to some deformity or uniqueness.Happenstance himself is equally fascinating. The boy has no memory on which to draw, yet a vast store of knowledge. He has various peculiarities and powers of which he himself is unaware, and no one who has any idea what he might be. And the hints he is able to uncover paint a picture as disturbing as it is intriguing.The abundance of strange creatures is another bonus. Dragons exist, but are mentioned only in passing. Most of what is seen is more original: the tyrant worm, the leviathan, and more.This ends well, but with a very clear pointer to the sequel, which I hope to get my hands on very shortly. I rate this book Highly Recommended. This is a strong beginning to what looks to be a very interesting fantasy series. This actually straddles fantasy and sci-fi due to the twist that shows up at the end. I appreciated the complex characters and the smoothly flowing plot. As a children's librarian I often only have time to read the first book in a series just to get the gist of it so I can sell it to my customers. This book was so good I just might have to find the time to squeeze in the rest of the series.
