We loved this book. We loved this series. A terrible thing to admit - I didn't think that I would like this book or series. Although I have always enjoyed Sean Cullen as a host on the CBC, I really didn't think I'd like him as an author because it seemed to me that he was too manic to focus for long on anything. I was so pleasantly surprised and wish I could let him know that I regret being pessimistic about his written work. We bought all 3 books in this series so that he could sign them when he was playing Smee in a Stratford production of Peter Pan a few years ago. He was amazing on stage, reasonable as he signed the books (all three of the comments he wrote were very funny) and is wonderful as a children's author. Page after page left us laughing so hard and we had an endless discussion going about the endnotes and footnotes he added on so many pages. His Hamish X is a wonderful character and the friendships he develops and he goes through some amazing adventures can be compared to those of Harry, Hermione and Ron. We've read this book more than once, take it off of the shelf often and have always been successful when we've given it as a gift. All the more thrilling, I heard Sean Cullen being interviewed once and he said he wrote this series for his son (also named Hamish) because he wanted a wonderful series to be out there for that age group. We are so glad that he did.

A wonderful book. Full of humor and great characters! I loved the imagination of the author(the hilarious footnotes!) Summary-Hamish X is a typical looking orphan sent from the ODA to a cheese making factory with slave children...or is he more than he seems? Hamish X escaped many orphanages before, some more outrageous than others. Many say he's smart, others think he's magic, or maybe its those mysterious boots that can't come off... Hamish X makes two very useful friends during his time in the factory, the rebellious Texas girl, Mimi, and the shy but intelligent Parveen. Together they plan an escape...or will something happen that they will have to save all the children! A speed up of a novel will make you wish for more! ;)--RE-READING THIS BOOK. Hamish X and the Cheese Pirates is the story of a young boy named Hamish X who is a member of the Orphan Disposal Agency. Two agents, Candy and Sweet, can not find a facility that Hamish can't escape from. When Hamish arrives at a disgusting cheese factory in Windcity, which creates Caribou Blue cheese, he meets two "friends", who are named Mimi and Parveen. A couple of weeks later, a fierce cheese pirate attack occurs and everyone from the factory is snatched except the three friends, Hamish, Mimi, and Parveen. The pirates also take Hamish's special book from Viggo who is the cheese factory boss. This sends Hamish on a journey after the pirates... Will he get his book back? Will he survive? I recommend this book to people who enjoy adventure and fiction books. I read this book in grade seven and thought I would enjoy reading it again.
