About book Half The Sky: Turning Oppression Into Opportunity For Women Worldwide (2009)

This is an incredibly powerful and moving book. It was really hard to put down. At one point Kristof mentions how people tend to want to donate to one individual rather than supporting large groups and though it is sort of unfortunate statement, it really was the individual stories of these girls in this book that made it so interesting. The stats, however, were important and gave context to the stories. I found myself telling everyone about this book and the stories about the girls who overcame adversities (and those who didn't) I was reading in it. It has really stuck with me and made me want to do something to help. I really liked the guidance at the end of the book (and I look forward to their newest book, A Path Appears, all about what to do) because so often you read about the turmoil in the world but never know what to do to make a difference.I vow to take the steps Kristof proposes. Everyone (not just women!) should read this book. An exceptional book! Very well written with a thorough research (presumably both field and desk researches). Basically the book compiles women's issues and the phenomenon of social entrepreneurship around the globe tackle the issues by empowering women and children. Despite the very subtle emphasis on American role in the empowerment movement, it doesn't compare to the power of real stories it brings to the readers. It lays out the problem in the open, explains the current solutions and it flaws while reminding the readers that no problem is really solved. At the end of the day, it's about willingness to move forward regardless whether the opportunity is created or the person needs to create opportunity themselves. A highly recommended books!
