When I began reading this book, I felt like I had started in the middle of the story. I was completely lost and would have to go back and reread to figure out what was going on. But then it picked up, and by the end I was in tears! Without giving too much away, I will say this about the book: I found the overall story to be unique and refreshing, especially since so many YA books lean toward the dystopian genre. The characters were intriguing. I liked Norhing from the beginning. I enjoyed watching Yarvi grow into a better, more independent person. Each character played a pivotal part in the story, and I am ready to start reading book 2 so I can see how those characters continue to develop the story. Great read. I gave it 4 stars rather than 5 because the beginning really moved slow. This is a great YA novel. Very mild language (sh**, arse-- each used only once that I remember). The only sexual content was 1, very simple kiss. It is really nice to read a YA novel that is not filled with strong language and sex. I am very glad I have this book in my library, and thanks to Net Galley, I am going to start reading book 2! 4/5This reminds me why I keep reading Abercrombie's books.Dark, gritty, everything that I love in the fantasy novels I read. The main character Yarvi isn't particularly strong or skilled like the other characters with wit being his only advantage.The book is exciting enough to read in a single night, and good enough to exist as a standalone novel. I recently learned that it isn't, so I'm looking forward to the next installment of the Shattered Sea.
