About book Guyland 1st (first) Edition Text Only (2000)
Though I have some reservations--it's not as rigorous as I'd like, and there are issues with the writing--this is worth reading, especially for parents of teenage boys and for feminists who are trying to understand where some of the puzzling misogyny we see among young men is coming from. This book focuses on the culture of young boys/men from ages 16 to 25, especially white men at universities. There are chapters on sports (watching and playing), video games, hooking up, hazing, binge drinking, pornography, predatory sex and party rape. Some of it, particularly in those last few chapters, is quite disturbing. But every time some "promising" young man commits a heinous crime and people wonder how he could do such a thing, I think this book has some of the answers. I read this to try to understand male culture. It's a traumatic read. It left me with a bleak feeling of hopelessness, until the final chapter that did try to redress this. It's very triggery and I would be wary of recommending it to anyone who has been on the receiving end of male aggression. That said, I think it is important too, so if you can steel your heart for a week or two it is worth it. Maybe like me, you'll put it down when it gets too painful and pick it up again later.
