About book Green Lantern Corps, Vol. 7: Revolt Of The Alpha-Lanterns (2011)

As a comic book writer Tony Bedard used to have a good grasp of how to mix space opera with a little superheroics. I could wonder if the problem here is changes ordered by the editor, but I think Bedard's writing has slipping for awhile now, and I've just not wanted to acknowledge it.Either 1) give me a story that I enjoy and care about or 2) characters I can become interested in. This volume fails to do either. I usually like John Stewart, but not here, because he is just "here". This does appear to an end to the alpha lantern concept, for the most part, in the Green lantern titles, but even that was big, "so what?' Green Lantern Corps as a title has been a bit hit and miss.In the early days it felt very much a cash-in. A sense of “Here’s our B-list characters doing some stuff too!” crept in, and the stories were a bit weak while the title found its feet. The prelude to Blackest Night improved the quality somewhat, but the question remained: after Blackest Night, would this loose Brightest Day tie-in be any good?Pleasingly, the answer is yes. Ardian Syaf’s art is clean, appropriately spectacular, and captures emotion and expression really effectively. The story is decent, but suffers from the same thing a lot of DC Comics storytelling suffers from—positing the idea that conflict in and of itself is interesting. Sometimes they’re right, but such emphasis on the plot rather than the story can leave a slightly hollow feeling in the reader. Still, this needs to be taken for what it is—an intergalactic adventure—and on that score it works very well. The back-up story written by Sterling Gates is okay if not amazing… he’s done better work on other titles (Supergirl). For non-fans, this would be a 3 star effort. For fans, a four star effort as it delivers more of what we want from this title.

I loved the titular story, but the second, shorter arc was boring.
