About book Grain Brain: The Surprising Truth About Wheat, Carbs, And Sugar--Your Brain's Silent Killers (2013)

The author argues that carbs -- grains and sugars - are contributing to dementia and diabetes, and that good fats - such as the kind coming from fish oils and olive oils -- are healthy for the brain. He argues against statins as the best way to heart health. He promotes a diet, and he sells supplements, and, apparently has an association with Dr. Oz. My spouse, who is a surgeon, took at look at some of Permutter's claims, and he does not feel the claims are warranted with evidence. Still, the book makes many good points about sugar and what we are hearing more and more about good fats. So, make your own decisions about this book. Permutter has his supporters and quite a few critics. The only reason I forced myself to finish this so-called book was to see how much more nonsense the author would come up with. Still, I found myself scanning some parts or skipping some. I'm afraid I might have missed some absolute gems doing this.Throughout the book the author keeps comparing apples and oranges to prove his point. Not to mention that he contradicts himself in some places. Rice and potatoes are good because they are gluten-free, then they are not good, because they are starchy. He gets so predictable, at the beginning of every single case one just knows that gluten will be the reason for the problem, no matter what kind it is. So, basically, you are ill, you have any kind of problem, check your gluten sensitivity, it's usually that thing. The author has cure everything through a gluten-free diet - from a bipolar disorder to erectile dysfunction. Apparently it's the miracle cure. And unless a person follows the author's prescribed diet of gluten-free stuff, they will probably suffer from Alzheimer's later on in their life. And I don't even want to go into details about his prescribed diet. It's basically eat a lot of meat, a ton of eggs, butter, a lot of fat, even saturated fat and be careful with fruits, don't eat too much of those. There is no such thing as too high cholesterol, if anything - low cholesterol is dangerous. The author points out that first, our ancestors did not eat that same wheat we do and did not eat fruits every day. Well, guess what? They did not eat meat that often too, if anything they foraged for fruits, roots and other edible plant stuff, because they were easier to come across. And how natural is butter or cheese, which the author recommends? And I almost forgot this part where he recommended eating wild meat like beef and lamb.Overall, a good candidate for the Quackery section.
