About book Goodnight IPad: A Parody For The Next Generation (2011)
I thought this was a fun book. When I first read the cover I was a little disappointed that people were starting to make books about our crazy technology obsession, but after reading it I thought it was really fun and a good reminder that we need to unplug a lot more often. Especially at night before bed. This was even a good reminder to me! I thought it was very creative with the rhyming and applying the different types of technology that we use. This was such a fun parody and I would read this to children in a classroom or my own children at home and talk about the importance of unplugging and having those moments of peace away from outside distractions. Goodnight Ipad is a modern parody on a childhood favorite of mine, Goodnight Moon. The whole book follows a family of rabbits who are very into the technological devices of the modern world. It fills the night with sounds and lights coming from each of the devices that everyone seems to be stuck on. It keeps the granny rabbit awake at night and finally she decides to do something about it so she can get her sleep. Follow the story as granny rabbit does something about it and finally is able to get her sleep. It was a cute story and had a fairly good message it in. However, I was not too enamored with it. I read this while ago near the beginning of our class and I do not have a copy of the book now to reference it. I do remember that it made use of rhyme which is always a good tool to help teach kids about rhyming words. So the author definitely put a lot of thought into the words she used. It is kind of hard to rhyme with all those odd names of devices, but I feel like she did a good job. Belated, I realized that the author's name is Ann Droyd which sounds like android. I feel like the kids who read this book will get a kick out of that. I do not think it was the writer's craft that I was not enamored with, more the storyline. I feel like the part about throwing all the devices out the window was a bit much, but as it's a parody, I can understand why it happened. I also feel like some parts of the story were a bit hard to relate to because not many will have all the devices. But with that as well, I can see why it was used because it is something that many kids will know about. So this book was kind of a an up and down feeling for me.I feel like I can relate this to teaching rhyme and using things that you are familiar with to write a story. I guess it would be a the art of specificity that I would be teaching. Speaking from the I and using things that you are a familiar to write a story with. I guess this could also be related to how our life experiences written down can become a story.
