About book Good Luck Girls Of Shipwreck Lane, The: A Novel (2013)

The Good Luck Girls of Shipwreck Lane tells the story of two Janine Brown's from Cedar Falls, IA who both think they won a million dollar home from the Home Sweet Home Network. Jannie Brown is a painfully shy seamstress who loves to cook, turning out large gourmet meals. Nean Brown is a spunky 20 something who wants nothing more than a place to call home. Throw in feisty Aunt Midge a hunky gardener and a mysterious organic farmer and you have a fun, sweet story about family, false perceptions and delicious food. The Good Luck Girls had an interesting premise that the author pulled off well. Two women with the same name, from the same town, both needing a fresh start. I felt the book was a bit long though, lagging in the middle and taking to long to get to the climax. I whipped right through the ending though, shedding a few tears and cheering on Jannie and Nean as they conquered their fears and became a real family. This book is a great beach/summer read, light and fun with the right amount of chick-lity-ness (new word?) If you are looking for an enjoyable vacation read, pick this book up. **I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair review** One star, why one star? Because, if you have ever read chick lit with generational characters, you have read this book before. There is a young girl/woman with an abusive boyfriend, a 30 something who really hasn't formed an attachment to a man in years, and an 80 something grandma, who you will love. And just like every other book like this, exactly what you think will happen happens. No, aliens don't land, natural disasters don't occur, and the only exception is a lottery/contest, but that is what brings these three women together. If you want to meet three characters you have met before (and, yes, for a beach read this might be what you want), then pick this book up. If you want great insight into these characters, well, they are so cookie-cutter, there isn't much more than any other book. But a warning, as you read this book and say to yourself "I wonder if _____ will happen as it did in the last book", for the good and bad, it does.
