About book Golden Domes And Silver Lanterns: A Muslim Book Of Colors (2012)

This wonderful book by Hena Khan gives the young reader a taste of Muslim culture and family life. It involves a little girl showing the reader the "colors" of her family, and of her culture. With each page, the reader finds out more about the main character's family members, but also learns very important vocabulary for the Muslim faith. The book also includes a glossary for extra help with some of the terms. This novel shows a non-stereotypical family, and shows the culture group in a positive and accurate light. This book fits under my topic families, and shows a family that practices Islam; it would be informative and beneficial for students who do not belong to that group. This book fits under the Poetry genre and is appropriate for children in Preschool to Second Grade. This book meets of a lot of the criteria for a quality picture book. The story is interesting to children, it is age appropriate, it utilizes style and language that is appropriate for the children's ages and interests, and it includes realistic and convincing characters. The illustrations are very intriguing, and they are also accurate to the story, they correspond to the text, they hold the children's interest, and they enhance and add to the story. The characters in the story represent one culture group, but it is accurate, and it exposes children to a new perspective and set of values. There are no negative stereotypes represented, the author belongs to the group represented, and their is diversity represented within the culture group. Golden Domes and Silver Lanterns is a great book talking about the different colors of the Muslim faith. On each page is a different color and a different description of something in the faith that is the same color. I like how the book has a rhyming pattern, it makes the book flow very well. My favorite page and illustration of the book is this, "Orange is the color of my henna designs. They cover my hands in leafy vines." Some of the words in the book may be difficult for those not of the Muslim faith, but in the back of the book there is a glossary that helps explain the words. I think that this is a great book because it can help children and even adults to better understand the Muslim faith. This would be a great book for educators to use when talking about the Muslim faith when it gets close to Ramadan. I highly recommend this book.
