In his introduction to this volume, Mamet explains that these short pieces were written in between his major efforts, especially when he got to some blockage. These off-the-cuff works kept him busy until his Muse came back to him. He also indicated that some of these represented his best writings. I don’t think so. Most of them appear to be just what they seem: things done while waiting for something else to happen. There are a few that seem to explore the author’s need for speech that isn’t speech, and to help him perfect that style to which we have become accustomed: the unfinished sentence, the run-on thoughts, the pregnant pauses, the misinterpretation of conversations, etc. In the main, you could skip this volume, since it doesn’t add to Mamet’s impact on today’s theater. Disappointing.
