About book God Save The Queen (2012)

An interesting book with plenty of exciting concepts and twists and turns. The characters were engaging and the style makes for a nice casual read. However, the ending could do with some work. It seemed to fizzle out in the last three chapters which was disappointing after the stakes had been so high throughout the rest of the book. The swearing is a bit excessive and sometimes a little uncalled for (but maybe that's just me nit picking). Not a bad book and definitely with some potential but could do with a little more tweaking. I think my review might be a little skewed, as the last book I read was the craptastic "Inescapable" by Amy Bartol, whose characters were crap and the logic was so beyond shattered I couldn't really get involved in the book. But nonetheless, I adored this book. Really. And I don't usually like steampunk, as I don't normally like junk-science, but this was only loosely affiliated with anything steampunk and quite honestly the science behind it was amusing (the genetic information- though it only went so far as phenotypic explanations, was still interesting). What I most liked about this book was the lead character was a woman and she was strong, but she didn't feel like the often stereotyped, "strong female character" where she's like Wonder Woman and just kicks ass. She was strong but also tired, and showed exhaustion, and then when she did just all out kick ass it was explained why. I also loved that the way her mind changed about her surroundings was based on actually doing some sniffing around and research. She didn't just WOW believe something because someone told her it was so. And as she found things out the logic with which she arrived to her conclusions made sense. This is actually something lacking in a lot of Urban Fantasy- a huge jump is often made without much supporting evidence. And lastly, but equally important- I loved the characters. Perhaps the main character said "fang me" a little too often, I can excuse this, as overall she was really fun. And smart and interesting and fallible in ways that I think most people would be. The characters were believable and I was sucked into their world. Definitely interested in seeing where this series goes!
