About book Gimme A Call (2010)

This is FUN!! Perhaps not Richelle Mead level of fun, or Huntley Fitzpatrick fun, but a whole new brand altogether. Mixed with an almost nostalgic sense, this chronicles the life of Devi, who like of many us made decisions that she regrets. a lot of them. Except not all of us have the access to a magical phone (hence the title) that enables us to call our past selves. While its fun in tone and nature, it is a reminder of all the paths we could have taken, and all the future's we might have had. As younger Devi, does different actions after older Devi suggests them, younger Devi continue son with her life. Older Devi's entire world shifts, from her friends changing, to her parents divorcing, and her mother winning the lotto. It is the cumulative effect of all of YDevi's actions that make up older Devi. Except ODevi keeps her original memories. I guess your story will always be your story, no matter happens. Mlynowski brilliant weaves the different years together and makes sense of this whole conundrum. And like a said before, despite all of its fun and lightheartedness, this is a poignant reminder of how lives and our past never truly go away. It was so weird but I couldn't put it down. This was an unconventional read, I might have preferred the typical girl meets boy story of Devi and Bryan but this was a very interesting take: senior Devi telling freshman Devi to stay away from Bryan because he will break her heart. The different situations that came about as consequences of trying to change the past was really interesting to read. I didn't like at the end when they were still two different people it's an unsettling thought that there is another you living your life just 3 years prior to the present. I figured Devi's life would go back at the end. And she ended up changing aspects of her life so it wasn't like a fantasy, it actually happened, she was actually talking to herself as a freshman. I think this is a great book to read if you're just beginning high school.
