The text Gilbert Goldfish wants a Pet by Kelly DiPucchio is a creative children's book that appeals to the humor, interests and imagination of young children. In reality a fish cannot have an elephant, bear, horse or many other animals as his pet, because logically a fish, in a fish tank, cannot have an animal that is bigger then him but children would entertain the idea. This book feeds off the phase that all children experience and that is the yearning for a companion. So just as Gilbert had to try out different animals to find the one perfect for him, children go through the same exact process. The illustrations by Bob Shea are colorful and fun as it eliminates the extra work of imagination on the readers part because the pictures give a play by play of the storyline. Gilbert Goldish is about a golfish named Gilbert who really wants a pet. I really enjoyed this children's story because of its odd creativity of a pet wanting to have a pet! It was fun and cute, and my 1st grade students really enjoyed it! It can definitely be used in the classroom to teach about a sequence of events and have students recall which different pets were introduced into the story and in what order. It also introduce problem-solution about how Gilbert solved his problem of really, really wanting a pet for himself. I think there are plenty of post-activities that can be done with this story, and I would recommend keeping it in the classroom!
