About book Geek Girl's Guide To Cheerleading (2009)

My older sister recommended this book to me so it's no surprise that I'd have high expectations. What's surprising is this: it's really not as good as she made it sound it was.The story goes like this: geek girl has a huge crush on jock guy, geek turns cheerleader, jock starts showing obvious interest on geek. In the end, it was all just a bet between the jock and his 'friends'. Jock says all the sweet stuff, geek forgives. It was not badly-written, though I would have wished for a 'more' different storyline. It had some gushy, toe-curling, romantic moments (which was one of the few reasons why I still kept on reading). I also liked the hint of humor in some of the dialogues. In short, it was a good read. Just not THAT good. Okay for a quick mindless skim-through, but stuffed chock-full of stereotypes and angsty teen luuuuuurve. I mean, the main character loves writing and her chat name is "book gurl"? Seriously? I mean, I have folders and folders of stories saved on my computer, and I read at least one thick book a day, but my chat name is not "book gurl". I feel no need to constantly remind people of my bookish nature! And oh yeah, if she's so literate, then why's she using a misspelled name? Hah, GOTCHA! Also why does her friend wear a "pi" cap? That's just redonkulous. No one wears "pi" caps, not even the most mathematically inclined people I know. About angsty teen luuuuuurve - I swear, most books nowadays have it as their ONLY plot device! It's disgusting! It's an abomination! It's- well, it's exactly what Jane Austen and Charlotte Bronte did, except they wrote better. Hmmph. Anyway, I don't like reading about luuuuuurve very much, so please, author dear, gloss over it and get to the good part! Oh wait. There is no good part.

We don't have cheerleaders at the HS where I work, but this was still a fun title.
