About book Gangster Squad: Covert Cops, The Mob, And The Battle For Los Angeles (2012)
Don’t confuse the movie with the book (which I didn’t watch). I read this book because this year I have been fascinated with the history of the LAPD, in particular its early days under Chief William Parker and the battle with Mob Gangster Mickey Cohen. A fascinating read, especially since it’s an account that is driven by interviews with former Gangster Squad members. I wished the book could have had footnotes of further historical trails for the history buff. But the journalistic style moves the narrative forward. I thought it was a fast read because it was a captivating subject—five hundred something pages in two days. El libro empezó con una puntuación de uno sobre 5, porque se me estaba haciendo pesadísimo. Pero sobre la pagina 150 me di cuenta de que lo estaba leyendo totalmente condicionada por la película, y eso me estaba impidiendo conectar con la historia. Cuando me di cuenta de mi error, la historia comenzó a engancharme porque ya no me repetía eso de " ¿y cuando pasará esto?" "uy, esto en la peli no era así". Me di cuenta de que son totalmente diferentes, y que el libro es mucho más interesante. La historia de los personajes es apasionante, y más, sabiendo que estoy leyendo lo que dijo en su día O' Mara, uno de los integrantes de la Brigada de Élite. Resumiendo, que me ha gustado mucho, a pesar de que se me hizo algo pesado al principio.
