About book Gandhi: A Manga Biography (2011)

This manga was a solid 3. There are things that could have been improved upon, but overall, I enjoyed it and learned a great deal.Pros: -the transitions of Gandhi's lifetime were made clear (sometimes with manga, the passage of time is not made so clear)-the different perspectives were refreshing-the dialogue was human and was excellent integrating real quotes from Gandhi's lifeCons:-the editor/translator should have paid better attention. There are many misspellings in the dialogue-sometimes the transitions from one character to another were abrupt I didn't have high hopes for this manga when I first picked it up, I expected it to be inaccurate or perhaps lacking in detail but I was pleasantly surprised. The graphic novel begins early on in Gandhi's life before his famed non-violent protest against the British. It explores his difficulty with public speaking as a child and his distaste with the caste system in his early teens. The novel then progresses to another relatively unknown period of Gandhi's life where he studies to be a lawyer in the UK. During this period he finally manages to overcome his fear of speaking when he opposes racist legislation in South Africa. Later on it shows how he forms his ideals of civil disobedience and puts them to use against the British in India. Despite facing heavy opposition as well as problems from the Muslim community, who want their own nation, Gandhi never compromises on what he believes in. When he asked for leniency for untouchables in the caste system and it was granted by the people was proof of how beloved he was. Eventually his iron determination pays off and India gains it's independence. The novel ends with tragic assassination. A beautiful story, I would recommend this to anybody who needs some inspiration.
