About book Gambit, Vol. 1: Once A Thief... (2013)

I vaguely remember Gambit from watching X-men cartoons as a kid, I think. But I don't remember him well enough to just jump in like this and actually care about Gambit's inconsequential adventures that're his own damn fault for messing with stuff he doesn't understand for the heck of stealing something. I mean, sure, if that's Remy's character, then... okay? But I know he has fans, and surely they're for something more substantial than this? Right? So yeah, not impressed with this. The art is great, but the stories are just... I had difficulty, honestly, remembering the names of the two dimensional characters he was running into. Not one for me, I think. The problem I have with many Gambit stories is Gambit, who, while not quite as deserving of fanboy derision perhaps as he used to be, is still a cool power trapped in a personality-free cuteboy package. He's the boyband superhero, quirky instead of interesting, and you won't ever get your shoes wet reading him.The first arc here has a Kingpin copy as the villain, and dialogue cloned from Warren Ellis all over the ending. Unspectacular to say the least, and would have earned only one star if not for some cool action sequences and one decent story twist.

Do You like book Gambit, Vol. 1: Once A Thief... (2013)?

Decent Gambit reboot. Lacked something that I can't quite place but I'll definitely read more.

Meh. Weak writing, average (but annoyingly sexist) art. Shame, for such a great character.

I am a huge Gambit fan, and although this series fell short, I still enjoyed it.
