About book Gaby, Lost And Found (2013)

I enjoyed this WAW possibility but felt it was very unrealistic. I've had to wait a while to get it from the library and was expecting a really good book, but was disappointed. I loved the parts about the animal shelter and the adds Gabby would write for each animal. But how could this girl legally go live with her best friend? Either the family would have to adopt her or she would have to live with her dad or go live with her mom in Honduras. I also wish it had more info about how her mom went about getting to the US. Anyway, this is a borderline yes for me. An engaging middle-school debut from this new author. Gaby's mother,an illegal immigrant, has been deported to Honduras. Her father, who has moved in to "care" for her, is preoccupied with work and other things and Gaby deeply feels his neglect. She puts her all into volunteer work at a local animal shelter, writing engaging advertisements to encourage people to adopt a pet. But what about a home for the lonely sixth-grade girl who is beginning to be aware of the "bigger picture" of the world around her, who misses her mother, doesn't quite trust her father, and needs a forever home of her own.
