About book Free To Learn: Why Unleashing The Instinct To Play Will Make Our Children Happier, More Self-Reliant, And Better Students For Life (2013)

A good enough book on the topic as an introduction to the ideas. I feel he skipped over a lot in the effort to "prove" his view points, one big one being his assertion that the Sudbury-model school would work for anyone. I would need to see more information on the types of families represented in the school model, and how such a model would work with families unable to participate, support, or extend the philosophy of learning at home. From hunter-gatherer cultures to the Sudbury Valley School, where children do whatever they want all day and educate themselves, this book is about the psychology of how children learn. The thesis is that kids are indeed made to learn what they need to learn to succeed in life, without the need for compulsory classes, tests, or grades. The majority of the book focuses on research about how children learn, but the author does offer a vision for parents, communities, and the education system as to how we can give children more freedom to be happier learners.
