Frankie Joe's life is about to change in a big way. He lives in a trailer park in Laredo, TX and is saying good bye to his neighbors. Circumstances with his mom mean that he will meet his father for the first time and live with him for 10 months. Frankie's dad is not particularly talkative as they travel across the country to a small midwestern town in the middle of farming country. Just before Frankie arrives at his new home he learns that he has a stepmother and four half brothers. Frankie Joe finds himself living in a traditional family, going to school every day, and fussing with siblings. FJ, Frankie's dad, is determined that all his sons learn responsibility. For Frankie Joe, this means doing more school work than ever. Frankie Joe decides he would rather live in Texas again and begins making plans to return. He will need money so he begins a delivery service for people in the town using his rescued bicycle. Things don't always turn out as planned. Read this book that speaks to your heart about a boy in circumstances that many relate to. Really loved this coming of age tale. It was full of heartbreak for Frankie Joe. At times (or really most of the book) I wanted to smack some sense into his momma for being so selfish and treating him the way she did. I was glad to be able to see him start to heal and adjust to life with his new family. I think this is definitely a story that some of my students will be able to relate to (unfortunately...that they some have first hand knowledge of that kind of situation) and look forward to sharing it with them.
