Rose tells a fascinating historical tale that reads like a spy novel. As a tea lover, this book revealed a lot that I hadn't known about the background business of the tea trade. Fortune makes a compelling protagonist as Rose explains the machinations of the East India Company to gain a stronghold on tea production, not just distribution. Rose vividly paints a picture of the rivalries between England and China as well as the commonalities, particularly found in the love of tea. Despite a few dragging moments towards the end, this book was a fun and informative read. An excellent book about the history of tea in China and how the British was able to both discover and steal the ancient secrets. Great detail into the botany and history of tea and how it was manufactured both in China and its growth in India. Also, had a very interesting perspective on the Opium wars and how the English justified the stealing of the tea IP for themselves. Overall a great read, highly recommended.
