Cordell is a small Cessna pilot barely making ends meet, counting his military pension and what he brings in as a flight instructor. When one of his military buddies is murdered, he is asked by his ex-wife to talk to the police. Since the dead guy is the one who stole his wife, he's not too keen to be helpful, but when Savannah's wealthy father offers him $25K to talk to the police, he agrees. There are lots of red herrings and the character development is really good. Cordell finds out everything is related in a convoluted way and as he tries to unravel it, the connections get more tangled. Published in 2012, this is the start of a new series about Cordell and the bits of military that the author drops into the story make it fun to read and sometimes a little scary. But I'm ready for the next one and hoping it is just as good. This is the first 'Cordell Logan' mystery and if Mr. Freed has the gumption to keep writing, it won't be the last to see print.Cordell's special quirk is that of being an ex-pilot of A-10s, those delightfully ugly Warthogs and presently a struggling flight instructor.Along the way he acquired kill time in 'Alpha', the usual elite government killer squad we all daydream about. But now he is trying to follow the path of the Buddha while embroiled in tracking down the killer of an old comrade in arms.Written with humor and an attitude, Freed takes us on an enjoyable ride, full of quirky characters, a sexy ex-wife (rich, of course), several twists and while an inveterate reader of such things as myself will get to self-congratulate on knowing the answers even before the questions are asked, that is itself a pleasure. The less schooled should have fun guessing and get to sigh a big "Ahhh, of course!" once or twice.Recommended.
