I swallowed this series whole. I fell hard for the characters - Tavi, Kitai, Bernard, Amara, Max, Ehren, Isana and so many more. It takes a mature and skilled writer to bring to life a world and characters that provoke the kind of investment that had me running to the library to get the next one before I had even finished the previous! While my familiarity with Roman history, culture, and terms made this series extra delicious, lacking that basis will not diminish enjoyment. The clever humor and the tight plotting that characterize Butcher's Dresden Files series are found here as well. It was a real treat to see Butcher do something completely different but retain all of the qualities that makes him such a blast to read. Some of the best bits of the series were the battle sequences. Butcher nailed these. He effortlessly combined his obviously extensive research on the topic with the kind of action that kept me on the edge of my seat. I won't say anything else. Wouldn't want to spoil the fun! My rating here reflects what I thought of the series as a whole. Highly recommend. I hate when a series comes to its end, but Butcher didn't disappoint and the ending was full of twists, emotion and much more. Tavi by far become a character I really enjoyed connecting with. I wasn't in the first book of the series sure whom I would connect with as the series unfolded and it was a good thing the plot held my attention, but in the end, Tavi was a character I related to and loved to see grow as the series evolved. I was also very impressed with all the different antagonist throughout the series and love how Butcher tied up most of the plots relating to these villains. I was very happy with series overall and how First Lord's Furn wrapped everything up in the end.
