I really enjoyed reading this story of recently freed slaves escaping the new challenge of share cropping in order to find hope and freedom in the west. I felt for the plight they found themselves in and found myself feeling angry for the continued abusive treatment they faced simply because of the color of their skin. I admired their determination to survive and make the most of the terrible situation in which they were placed. The author did a great job intertwining the stories of the poor black sharecroppers and the wealthy white doctor and his family. I enjoyed seeing the young privileged whites begin to see the injustice the blacks had faced. I would definitely read more from this author. I really enjoyed this book. The author Judith McCoy Miller really made me feel like I was there. Good author, good book. I really love Historical Fiction Books. I learned a lot about people who traveled to Kansas and tried to start a life there. Kansas is where my parents lived and my mother use to tell me stories about the houses made out earth. Really good book! I recommended to anyone to read. Can't wait for the next book.
