About book Filter Bubble: What The Internet Is Hiding From You (2011)

Malargomentato, supersemplificativo e malcelatamente conservatore. Really interesting stuff, particularly, for me, this part: the reminder that "[personalization filters] surround us with idea with which we're already familiar (and already agree), making us overconfident in our mental frameworks. Second, [they] removes from our environment some of the key prompts that make us want to learn" (84). We'd all do well to remember that the "filter bubble" exists, and it "isn't tuned for a diversity of ideas or of people . . . living inside it, we may miss some of the mental flexibility and openness that contact with difference creates" (101). I really believe in the value of considering ideas and opinions that differ from your own, and in maintaining a lifelong eagerness to learn new things. It's easy to get entrenched in what is familiar and comfortable and "to believe the world is a narrow island when in fact it's an immense, varied continent" (107). This book is an encouragement to step outside of the bubble -- or at least to be aware of its existence. Food for thought!
