About book Far Away Home, An American Historical Novel (2011)

Well researched historical fiction. Wagon trains, the treacherous push West, shrinking Native American lands, gold and silver mining and the building of the trans- continental RR. There is plenty of romance and as in real life, there is no tidy ending, which may be why others panned the book. The heroine is strong willed and struggles with the constraints placed on women while holding on to some conventions herself. Another reviewer saw the correlations between this saga and Gone with the Wind. I drew the same concluding . It's worth the read. The story was good. I liked how Aislynn made things happen for herself. It made her seem strong. The ending caught me by surprise. It ended so abruptly. I thought since the author toyed with the affections between Moran and Aislynn that in the end Aislynn would find "love". Instead it ended swiftly and she traveled full circle. Historical references bothered me because they were not quite correct but that was minor. while reading the book I kept thinking it reminded me of some other story but could not quite pin point it until I read other reviews. Yes, Gone with the Wind.
