About book Falling Into The Fire: A Psychiatrist's Encounters With The Mind In Crisis (2013)

Falling Into the Fire is a good quick read that presents several interesting stories about a psychiatrist's experiences with patients. Dr. Montross is successful in presenting these illnesses in a way that is accessible to those with non-psychological backgrounds, as well as bridging the gap between those who are mentally ill and those who are not. Her personal anecdotes at the end of each chapter do well to make the reader acutely aware of the humanness of those who are suffering from mental illnesses. This is incredibly prudent given the usual difficulty in relating to those suffering by those who are healthy. A brilliant blend of theory and empathy that I couldn't put down. Dr. Montross has written something that engages readers of all levels of psychiatric knowledge. Without making her patients spectacles, she describes several cases of difficult to "treat" conditions- and does so in a way that humanizes the patients and acknowledges the limitations of the field. She is not shy to ask those deep questions- to wonder whether we have medicalized what used to be honored as profound creativity, spirituality, even sainthood. Very well put together. I highly recommend.

A good effort, with interesting subject matter. Falls a little short on execution.
