I was browsing through My Media Mall for a new book to download, and I just couldn't resist a librarian heroine, even though the cover image is totally tragic.Thankfully, the librarian is not as dowdy or buttoned-up as the cover would imply - she just has a taste for vintage clothes and the cover artist captured that in the worst way possible. She's an academic librarian, and though we don't spend much time with her at work, author Karina Bliss has still gotten the details right. Rachel is a subject librarian that is also responsible for some user instruction and mentions campaigning for a larger acquisitions budget in her area.I enjoyed this one a lot more than I thought I would, especially since it's both a contemporary AND a category romance, not what I typically seek out. While it suffers a little bit from stock character syndrome (mostly the Goth sidekick and burnout rocker older brother), the hero and heroine are fleshed out and fully realized characters. They both grow as a result of their friendship and love for one another, and they had excellent chemistry. They both struggle from trust issues (which is pretty much the de facto struggle of all contemporary characters, it seems) but Bliss is good at making them feel organic and natural to the characters, and while there are a few misunderstandings keeping Devin and Rachel apart, they're both willing to confront difficult truths and are honest and up-front about their feelings. The B-plot, about Rachel's teenage pregnancy and its consequences, is rendered with care, but it overwhelms the romance at times. In fact, this one's a little light on the romance, but I liked the characters and the writing enough that I forgave it that oversight.A nice surprise for a quick impulse read. Devin, 33 Jahre alt und der Star einer Rockband zieht sich nach Neuseeland, dem Heimatland seiner Mutter, zurück, um zu studieren und ein neues Leben zu beginnen.Durch andauernde Alkohol- und Drogenexzesse ist seine Gesundheit angeschlagen und er mußte aussteigen, denn seine Lebenserwartung tendierte gegen Null.Als Devin an seinem ersten Tag auf dem Campus auftaucht, wird er von allen umschwärmt, nur Rachel, Bibliothekarin in der Unibibliothek, hat keine Ahnung wer der arrogante Typ mit den auffälligen Kleidern ist und wiedersteht seinem Charme….ob sie das durchhält?Das Buch mußte ich schon wegen des Titels kaufen :lol:Rachel und vor allem Devin sind großartige Figuren für einen leichten Liebesroman. Sie sind klug, lebhaft und charmant.Karina Bliss gelingt es hervorragend, das Innenleben der beiden glaubhaft darzustellen und es zwischen ihnen knistern zu lassen.Kompliziert muss es natürlich auch werden und dafür hat sich die Autorin ein Problem in Rachels Vergangenheit und den älteren Bruder von Devin, der ebenfalls in der Band spielte, ausgedacht, um dafür zu sorgen, daß es das Pärchen nicht zu leicht hat.Ich denke, ich verrate nicht zu viel, wenn ich sage, daß natürlich am Ende alles gut wird, wie ich es von einem Liebesroman erwarte!Was ich auch sehr schön fand war, daß der Roman ungewöhnlicherweise in Neuseeland spielt. Das hat man nicht so wahnsinnig oft.Alles in allem ist ‘What the Librarian did’ ein wunderschönes, leichtes Buch, das man am besten gemütlich auf dem Sofa oder irgendwo in der Sonne sitzend liest und bei dem ich herrlich abschalten konnte.
