AP Lit Choice Fiction-I definitely enjoyed this book more than I thought. I was drawn by the cover and the title, but I was surprised to find out that this book took place in 1904, which I couldn't tell from the front or back cover. I became a little more skeptical of this book at this point. However, I found the time period to be very effective in this book: it shapes the plot but it is still relatable. It was interesting to get a perspective on the west from this time periods point of view, but I can't help but wonder how much the author's time period (present day) shaped their views. I guess we'll never know. As for the plot line, it was a little repetitive at some points but I think that goes with how Maggie was thinking. I also think it could have focused more on her mom instead of her because sometimes the things about her coming of age experiences dragged on. But I wasn't expecting the mystery that this book gave. The flashbacks were definitely an important part of the authors style. Sometimes they were confusing, because it's hard to tell when it's switching to the past. But overall, it was very effective in giving the reader insights on what happened to Maggie's mom. It keeps the reader wondering and adds an essential element of mystery. As I mentioned earlier, it's relatable to young people especially as it covers themes like what society tells you to do vs what you want to. I would recommend it to middle school or high school girls due to the extreme gender roles seen in the book. It's interesting to see what has and hasn't changed in regards to women's roles. It gives a good perspective on the life and expectations of a young girl in this time. Overall I recommend this book! This was more of a 2.75 but I rounded up.The first half of this book I just didn't really like. I disliked the character and all that was happening. I had to agree with Tom, she was a snob.It got a little better after she travelled around Yellowstone but I don't think I really started to like her until the end. There wasn't much happening until the end either when some fast paced sections had me glue. I was also expecting more romance but I felt like it was more of a coming-of-age story withe romance in there.
