About book Ex-Communication (2013)

As with all my review of these Ex-Heroes books I'm going to struggle to say more than 'Zombie; Superheroes; Awesome!' Switch off half your brain (the literary critic part) and have fun with the ride as zombies and monsters get kicked, bunched and incinerated! I didn't enjoy this one quite as much as the previous two, but it was still great entertainment that I struggle to put down.In this one, the clue is in the title, the subject of people returning from the dead is central. I mean back from the dead in a more conscious living form than the hordes of exes! Max aka Cairax has been hanging around as a spirit only Barry can communicate with, and now wants a body to inhabit plus Doctor Sorenson's daughter Madelyn isn't as dead as everybody assumed. Things get a little more magical and religious with spirits and demons to tackle!I liked Maddy well enough andI thought the way she was introduced was cool. Playing Dragon Age has taught me you don't trust a guy who spends his time messing with demons, so I was wary of Max. Plus remember the story of how he got infected and died? I wish Clines would stop bringing that up. It's interesting to mix the sorcery stuff with the more science-fiction world of zombies, I quite like that we've now just chucked everything into the big crazy pot. There is lots of Captain Freedom being AWESOME in this book. He is HARDCORE. He shares driving more of the story with George which I liked. George is cool and all but I like to hear more from the others. There isn't much Stealth, although you learn more about who she is under the mask and she is softening up a tiny tiny bit! There was barely any Cerberus/Danielle which I missed. My main criticism is that I'm pretty sick of Legion. He's back again. I know that he can't really be killed because he doesn't have a body any more.. but I wish they'd find a way!I can't say much more than that.. these books are what they are - comic books written in prose! - and I love them for it. I liked this book a lot. So far out of the four I’ve read this is my favorite because of the character Max. Maybe also with the add in of supernatural genre into the series. I personally haven’t read another series that have superheroes and zombies in it, unless you count the *SPOILER* series with their super soldiers and zombie-like enemies. In the Ex-Hero series a group of people survive in a zombie apocalypse, although the survivors actually call them exes or ex-humans to make it easier to comprehend. The survivors have made their base of operation in Hollywood Studios, AKA the Mount sometime past 2016. This would be just a typical zombie (exe) survival book, but it is not. The twist to this series is that there are superheroes with these survivors. In Ex-communication, the third book in the series, the survivors of the mount deal with a familiar, yet different foe. With the rediscovery of Rodney, now named Legion after dying in the first book and becoming a Cajun speaking hivemind for the zombies, Legion continues his barrage of attacks on the Mount. But one of the heros, Zzzap, a human silhouette of energy, has been keeping a secret. He can see dead people. Or at least one, Max. When Max was alive he was a sorcerer that was able to transform into Cairax, a demon from the Abyss, whenever he puts on his medallion. As a sorcerer, he had a backup plan just incase if he had died to return, which was carried through through the dead body of one of the scouts that died earlier that day. Once he returns, a extremely ticked off Cairax appears outside of the Mount preventing any chances of getting out to scout. "We're not safe. This isn't remotely safe anymore. This is like being out in the middle of the ocean, a thousand miles from anything, on a six-dollar pool raft with great white sharks circling you. Except the raft has a hole in it and the shark's armor-plated, on meth, and has a laser cannon mounted on its skull. That's how 'safe' we are." - Max, page 192. In this book Max the sorcerer, to me, has the most interesting story. The quote above sealed the deal to me. In fact, I think he makes it my favorite out of the four books. He covered his body in tattoos and symbols as protection and to get his powers. He was able to capture Cairax into a medallion and use it for good in Hollywood while patrolling for crime, despite the frightening look. Unfortunately Max was a cocky ladies man. So when the outbreak happened apparently Max finds out that the only invulnerable part of Cairnax’s body is his tongue which ends up getting him infected during a make-out session with a “hot” exe which killing him. Also unfortunately one of his wards backfired on him and got stuck in some limbo with the demonic spirit of Cairax. In that limbo, Cairax was able to torture Max as much as he wanted for dishonoring and imprisoning him. Max was able to make Cairax a bargain. He bargained the world if they were to ever escape. Cairax found it appealing and continues to torture Max as he waited for the limbo to end through the death of Ex-Cairax. All Max had to do was find Cairax a suitable body that would be able to handle his demonic spirit. All together I rated this ⅘ stars. I would say the series is for young adults who would like a twist to their zombie novels. Also because of the two superheroines skintight outfit which is always pointed out.
