About book Evan Burl And The Falling, Vol. 1-2 (2000)
Evan Burl is one of those books on the creepy edge, which is not normally my favorite. I tried it anyway, and could not put it down. This is a fantasy really unlike any other, so that is always fun. I find that many books are described as, "in the style of Harry Potter, or Lord of the Rings, etc." Evan Burl is whole new fantasy in a category of its own. It keeps you on the edge, gradually giving you pieces of the puzzle and leaving you wanting more. I got this book for free from Barnes & Noble, I'm all about the free books.You know when you finish a book, and you're disoriented...I possible hate this book, possibly I love this book. It's been about a week, I still don't know. Plot wise, which I think I have correctly in mind, there was a man who discovered sapience, and passed on this ability to his three sons. And they passed it on to their families. Sapience, or the ability to use magic, pretty much makes you crazy. Even if you manage to keep yourself from going completely crazy, everything you see is most likely not real, or it may be, and there's almost no way to be able to tell. Also...since the person is able to use high levels of really powerful magic, they have the power to make it real. Which makes the book, incredibly interesting and confusing. Even lives in a horrible dark and run-down castle. Which 10 girls that fell from the sky, that can't really die from injuries or starvation. Even and the girls are used as slave labor, working these giant boilers and machines called "clankers". Evan read in a book that he will become very dangerous at the time of his "falling" and that several people want to kill him before that happens, before he turns bad.During the year leading up to his "falling" some of the girls are murdered, and Evan, who can't tell when he's sleeping, sleep-walking, dreaming, and if anything is real or not real, struggles to coherently figure out what's killing them, because he suspects, that it just may be him. He tries desperately to understand, as Henrietta's name, is next on the list, and she's the one he's closest to of all the girls.If the book was a little easier to understand, I could see it as a creation of Tim Burton or Neil Gaiman, dark, creepy and grotesque. But because things are so wildly non-nonsensical, and timelines are so skewed, I don't know that it would ever translate.So even though this book is crazy confusing and it takes a bit of work to understand the undertones of the plot, the author is wildly creative, and definitely offers a very unique perspective and world.
