About book Eternal Kiss Of Darkness (2010)

Eternal Kiss of Darkness is another novel within the Night Huntress World that takes you to the corners of that world. It is a story about the Master Vampire Mencheres. Through the story you can learn more about him, also a bit more about his back story and his powers. Within the regular Night Huntress Books Mencheres is only a side character, therefore it is not possible to grasp his character completely. Then I read the first 4 books of the Night Huntress Series, it is only clear that Mencheres seems to hide a lot and doesn't talk about himself much. He is very mysterious and keeps to himself, he only reveals what is necessary. It is obvious that he is very old, but also of royal blood and therefore he is used to people following his orders without even a word. It gets confirmed in this book that he is an Egyptian pharaoh. Through is sire he had a lot of power that he split, so he could give half of it to Bones in order to combine their vampire lines. It is shown a bit what Mencheres is able to do without even touching somebody or anything. Through the book it gets clear that Mencheres was about to prepare for his death, as he is tired of life. But that changes when he meets Kira, an assistant of an private investigator. Before she learned to be a cop, but she cannot work in that profession due to some circumstances in her past. When she is on her way home, she interrupts Mencheres plans, because she thinks he is getting attacked by ghouls and she tries to help him, but gets hurt in the process. Mencheres cannot let her die and gives her his blood. He also takes her with him, so he can alter her memory when she is awake. But he can't, because Kira seems to have some extra mental strength, so he can't convince her with his green eyes that what happened the night before, hasn't happened. Also time doesn't help, so Mencheres ends up trusting Kira and lets her go to live her life as usual. Still that wasn't the last that they seen of each other. Because Radjedef, a guardian vampire that Mencheres has a feud with, is trying to get Mencheres remaining powers as he thinks he should have been the one to receive them. He seems jealous a lot of times wants revenge. He is trying to trap Mencheres so he has no other choice but to give him the power. Throughout the story and because of that feud, Kira is becoming a vampire and it is shown how a newborn vampire is feeling in the first few days and weeks from a human point of view. Kira is like a baby that need to learn to walk, to eat and to feel all over again in a different way. That part I found very interesting. We have seen this with Cat already, sure, but with Kira it is a whole other perspective as she is not half vampire but 100 percent human until the change. The relationship between Mencheres and Kira starts to grow more and more, but it is clear that they already liked each other in the beginning. But as a vampire Kira is also connected to Mencheres. She can sometimes feel what he feels. I liked this process that they had to go through and that Kira shows Mencheres a different kind of life. She also shows him not to see everything in black and white and that the darkness that he sees instead of a real vision could have something to do with his mental state. Later he discovers that the blackness has a whole other meaning than he thought of before. Between the two books about the Night Huntress World, I found this one the more interesting one. Before I already found Mencheres as an interesting character. I know that he isn't always right with his decisions and he regrets them later on, but most of the time he doesn't only considers himself, but also others and especially his vampire line. I too found it not right, that he didn't tell Cat about her past in the first place, when Gregor appeared, but I can understand why he did it. Now I can understand him even better and I think he deserved a little love in his life with Kira. Sometimes he seemed a little lost, but found himself again because of Kira. And that is always a good thing. In the Cat and Bones series, Bones's grandsire, Mencheres, has always been a mysterious figure; the 'Gandalf' of the vampire characters, if you will. He's powerful and always has a hidden agenda, and one would assume he'd be that way no matter what. That assumption not only gets busted, but absolutely obliterated in "Eternal Kiss of Darkness," the second spin-off book in the Night Huntress world. Here Mencheres is ready to commit vampire suicide and almost succeeds at the beginning of the story, until a young human female, Kira, interferes and ends up saving his life as well as her own. What follows is a story of two people reawakening and discovering each other, a mystery and feud of epic proportions, and sex in all places, including Disneyland. Yes, you read that right. While you don't have to know the previous history of Mencheres from the Cat and Bones books to enjoy this one, it will help. Either way, "Eternal Kiss of Darkness" is a rip-roaring good time.
