About book Escape From Mr. Lemoncello's Library (2013)
I loved the adventures of the twelve kids who are working their way through the library, after being a part of a "lock-in" and challenged to get out by the next morning. The library in Mr. Lemoncello's, master board game maker, has been defunct for many years. Now there is a new state of the art technological library that twelve twelve year olds have won the chance to christen, having written a required essay, and being chosen by Mr. Lemoncello himself. The reward is exciting and enticing to twelve year olds, being the representative of Mr. Lemoncello's company for the next year! The clues introduce the kids to wonderful books that many adults will remember reading. Those hidden pieces of learning, such as understanding the Dewey Decimal System, and problem solving as a team are delightful. This novel was somewhat reminiscent of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Although a different setting, the premise is similar. All in all a delightful read. Luigi Lemoncello is an outlandish librarian, game-maker, and puzzle-maker who reminded me an awful lot of Willy Wonka and Walt Disney if they got mixed together. It is about a seventh grade boy, Kyle Keeley, who is a master at board games, puzzle games, and iSpy games. A new library is opening in his hometown, Alexandriaville, by Mr. Lemoncello, Kyle’s idol who created all his favorite childhood games. There is an essay contest at his school where Mr. Lemoncello is to select 12 lucky students to come and have a sleepaway at his new library before it is open to the public, not to mention a personal tour with Lemoncello and his head librarian, Dr. Yanina Zinchenko. Kyle bombs his essay, but attracts Mr. Lemoncello’s attention with his short yet sweet essay about balloons, sharing a personal admiration of the popular party decorations. Kyle thinks that this opportunity couldn’t get any better because his best friends, Akimi and Miguel, also made the cut. Already ecstatic about their sleepover and tour, the students are overwhelmed when Mr. Lemoncello reveals the real purpose of this adventure.
