About book Epidemic Of Absence: Why Our Immune Systems Have Turned Against Us, And What Scientists Are Doing To Find A Cure (t) (2012)
My lone complaint about this book is the density of information, which made it a challenging read for someone without any kind of biology experience beyond high school. It made me somewhat terrified to have children, given the various maladies that may await them in our increasingly sanitized world. This is a fascinating read if you're at all interested in the relative explosion of allergies, asthma, and other immune system issues. We think a lot about what we're doing to the external environment with pollution. This book reminds us that our bodies, just like the land, water and air, evolved with a certain "environment." There is a lot about the modern industrialized world that is likely changing our immune systems and our responses to the outside world for the negative. Worth every word - well-researched, thoughtful and an excellent introduction to the scientific world of the creatures that live in us and on us and make us who we are.
