About book Elizabeth Street: A Novel Based On True Events (2006)
I bought this book a few years ago because it sounded fascinating, and then I just kept forgetting about it or putting it off, but I am so glad I finally read it. I loved the writing style, the story was fascinating, and you could tell it was incredibly well researched. It also helped that it didn't read as if it was non fiction. It drug a little bit for me between 75% and 90%, but overall the book was worth reading and I would absolutely recommend reading it. I would give this 3 1/2 stars because I enjoyed reading this book, particularly the last part which involves the kidnapping of a little girl. Many other reviews say this is about the mafia, but I don't agree. It is about an immigrant family who becomes targeted by the Black Hand, a group that was active before the Mafia. That is only part of the story, though. It involves turn-of-the-century Italy and New York and Italian families coming to New York because they were starving in Italy. It is a relatively easy read.
