About book Elizabeth Is Missing (2014)

I found this a bit hard to keep reading at first, since it's a bit close to home, reflecting a lot of experiences my sister and I have had with my Mom. But I'm glad I persevered. It's about a woman with dementia, still living on her own and obsessed with tracking down her friend Elizabeth, who is no longer in her home. but it also links back to another woman who went missing shortly after the War (her sister). An accurate depiction of dementia, based on my experience - while many memories are lost some get stronger (for a while), and, no matter how much you think has been lost, there is still a lot going on in there. Sometimes it just can't get out. Intriguing story told from an 82 year old woman's POV. As her memory slips more each day, Maud tries to convince those around her that her elderly friend Elizabeth is missing. These fragmented passages contrast with Maud's very lucid memories from 1946, the year her older, glamorous married sister disappeared. The parallel events mingle in Maud's mind and leave the reader anxious to resolve both mysteries. The contemporary storyline is poignant, realistic and sometimes wryly humorous. The tragic post WWII story has a vivid, cinematic quality. An excellent choice for book clubs.

This novel was quite sad but very moving as well. Try to read it when you're NOT PMSing.
