Wow! What a great book. I'll say that about any holocaust story because I am very interested in it. I am polish and my grandmother and her parents were affected by it in the past. I've heard her story and it's amazing and devastating in it's own and this book is just the same. I read this very quickly because it is so short but it did not need to be longer. I love how it got to the point and I love the ending. Now I want to see the plaque made in honor or franciszka and Helena. What incredible people. My grandmothers parents hid Jews as well and she told me how hard it was to do that. People will amaze you with their ability to think of others before themselves. Nonetheless great holocaust book!!! Das Geheimnis meiner Mutter basiert auf einer wahren Geschichte und erzählt von Franciszka Halamajowa und ihrer Tochter Helena, die zur Zeit des zweiten Weltkriegs in einer kleinen polnischen Stadt zwei jüdische Familien und einen deutschen Soldaten verstecken. Unglaublich, dass die beiden all diese Menschen in ihrem kleinen Haus untergebracht haben, ohne aufzufliegen. So beeindruckend und aufwühlend die Geschichte auch ist, hätte ich mir doch mehr Fokus auf einzelne Figuren und ihre Gefühle gewünscht. Stattdessen setzt das Buch insgesamt vier Mal neu an. Zuerst, um dem Leser Franciszka und Helena vorzustellen und danach um zu zeigen, wie die beiden Familien und der Soldat ihren Weg in das Haus gefunden haben. Dabei vergehen auch schon mal zwei Jahre in einem Satz. Schade, aber dennoch lesenswert.
Excellent book. Not many happy endings during these horrific times of the Holocaust!
