About book El Rayo Mortal (2013)

Distant. If you've read Clowes' other work, you know the sort of distance that exists between the reader, the character, and the world. Clowes' work tends towards misanthropy - everyone is bad in some way, and the shading of bad is just that. People don't redeem themselves - they wait too long and the boat sails away. The story of Andy is not dissimilar. He is cut from the same desperate cloth as Wilson and Enid and it really is the reader's choice to figure out what is right, wrong, and if it is all worthwhile. For me, Clowes makes you think. He challenges the reader in ways that other comic writers don't even dream of. His work is a slow, painful exploration of alienation, and I'll be back for more soon enough. Andy is a loner in high school and from a difficult family -- raised by his grandfather. Is it his fantasy or reality that makes him into a superhero capable of killing with a death ray? The end perspective from an adult Andy's perspective makes it seem frightening possible that is in, in fact, a murderer. But I like way in which the book leaves open a certain possibility that the murders are imagined, in the same way that the death-ray, the costumes, and the flying are imagined.

Do You like book El Rayo Mortal (2013)?

Another demented view of life as we know it from the great Daniel Clowes. Why wait for the movie?

What happens when a real kid gets superpowers - it's like Kick-Ass but terribly bleak.
