This is a very dear story that covers many issues of loss, love, friendship, and overcoming the worst. The writing style of this book is unlike any I have read before, children's or otherwise. It is simple, but since it is told in the perspective of a gorilla, simple works well. I was put off at first with how separated all of the paragraphs were and the brief chapters, but I could not put the book down. It was an intriguing tale, a fast read, and very moving. I borrowed the book from a 10 year old who knows I am working writing children's books, and yet I was captivated with the characters and astonished with how much emotional ground Applegate was able to cover. It has inspired me not to shy away from difficult topics but instead embrace them and make the accessible to children so they can learn empathy and the impact of loss at their level. Definitely a worthwhile book for older children and adults. Wow. This was a beautiful book. Told from the perspective of Ivan, a silverback gorilla held in a cage in a mall. About his life there, his interactions with the other animals, and his eventual plan to help free his friend, a baby elephant. While, of course, this is a work of fiction, Ivan is based on a real silverback and many of the parts of his story are true. This is a kids' book but I will recommend it to everyone I know. I am a sucker for a good animal story.
