About book Eighth Grade Is Making Me Sick: Ginny Davis's Year In Stuff (2012)

Ginny is now in 8th grade, and she and her family have just moved. Ginny joins the cheerleading squad and finds true love (well, at least a guy she can relate to and have fun with). But amidst these happy events, her stepdad loses his job, her mom finds out she’s pregnant and quits her job, Henry – her older brother – gets in trouble with the law again, and Ginny is diagnosed with colitis. Money problems and stress are not helping with her medical issues. But, by the end of the book things are starting to look up. Ginny Davis’ continuing story is told through a collection of stuff (notes on the fridge, journal entries, poems, IMs, and other bits and scraps). I absolutely love how much you can get out of the author’s collages of these every day communications and objects. I have enjoyed each of these books and would welcome a third! An entertaining and quick read. A companion to Middle School is Worse than Meatloaf. (Each novel is stand-alone, so you don't have to have read the first one.)What I liked best was the freedom for the reader to infer the events of the book without outright giving away the action--in other words, it makes the reader think.Good for: a middle school girl; a light summer read; a child in a family affected by the bad economy; a new sister; a big sister; a child in a blended family; a reader who likes graphic novels.
