I happened across this book while purposefully seeking out authors I had never read. Expecting too little, I suppose, I was pleasantly surprised to find myself intrigued from the beginning. Still the skeptic, I reasoned the narrative would flag and I would probably begin to see weaknesses in dialogue, plot or action. Yet the more I read, the more I switched from critic to absorbed reader. I still know nothing about the author, except that she is very talented and disciplined, and has a heart to connect with her audience. As an author myself, I found myself envious of Sarah Sundin's ability to research and flesh out her characters. Great job! 3.5 starsI'm an all around big fan of historical fiction romance, it's kinda my guilty pleasure read. I'd rather read about romance with the backdrop of WWII than whatever present day Nicholas Sparks story is doing.I was happy with A Distant Melody because you can tell she did her homework with the time period. The detail of B-17 missions was interesting and was a good break from what might be a little too much romantic sap. The again like I said it could be a lot worse.Allie and Walt are charming as are the rest of the characters. The book's predicable yet sweet enough that you don't mind. However there's so many near misses to getting these two together I was starting to get a little annoyed by the end.Looks like this is a three book series so I'll continue. If you're looking for romance with history as a backdrop you'll like this. If you're looking for more story with a bit of romance, I recommend the Maggie Hope series by Susan Ella MacNeal.
