About book Eavesdropping On Jane Austen's England (2000)
Roy & Lesley Adkins tell the story of England and its people at the time of Jane Austen's life. It is the story of the real lives that existed at that time. While some might read a Jane Austen book and think, "How romantic, what beautiful dresses, I wish I lived then." After reading this book I would reply, "I'm glad to live in 2014 with indoor plumbing, good medical care and safe food sources. I have no desire to go back to those days." This is a great book for anyone who would like to learn more about the Georgian and Regency periods in England. This is a book full of research covering social customs as observed in England during the life of Jane Austen (1775-1817). The idea was to show how those customs may have affected Austen's writing. I used it more for family history to see how life could have been for my ancestors. Chapters are broken down into information such as marriage, children, fashion, hygiene, religious beliefs, work, medicine and more. My absolute favorite thing was the chronological overview. I may have created my own timelines to discover was happening when books were written. It helps provide a more complete understanding of the author and the story they are telling. It was a pleasant surprise to have one already organized in this book.
