#18 ion my 52 In 52 Quest: Fascinating look into the extreme mindset and experiences of the ultra-runner. Especially appealing because Scott is from Proctor, MN outside of Duluth. His local references bring his amazing story home. King and I are tempted to try his recipes---he makes them sound delicious and super-nutritious. Thank you to our running buddy, Marianne, for loaning us the book---Easy Striders Circulating Library is a source of inspiration. An autobiography of an Ultramarathon runner (someone who does 100-ish mile races without any breaks. Generally more than four-times longer than say, the Boston Marathon). The nice twist is that he's a vegetarian and sometimes vegan. After reading some reviews I thought the guy would come off as preachy or be generally annoying - definitely not the case.Granted, the man is an amazing athlete who has won the races and is considered among the best in the sport so he Deserves what would appear to be a self-aggrandizing tone. And he talks about the wins and paths to victory. Even so, I thought it was done with humility.This book is valuable for a few of solid reasons - 1) it gives insight into how to achieve your goals and is a treatise on self-determination. See how many miles you can run in 24 hours without stopping - this guy did over 160 of them (yet there are some who can do even more!).After a certain point it isn't about the physical body - it's about just doing it. His musings/investigations/philosophies give insight into how to get it done. But more to the point, the PATH to getting it done.2) Tremendous feats of physical endurance and athletic ability can be sustained on a meat-free diet. An entire career. The book contains a collection of great recipes for meals and snacks. Looking forward to making some. So, it's a win for the vegetarian crowd.3) It's a compelling adventure, this guy's life. I don't care if he's left out many of the lost races - but he does cover some of those, and the DNFs - along with the mind-boggling victories. And maybe there's a little agenda pushing going on, I'm not sure. But sometimes it's damn near poetry, whatever he's doing. It is inspiring.4) Has lots of practical and well-communicated tips for beginner runners.It was a page-turner for me, and those aren't typical. Pretty much going to be something good here for everyone. Give it a read.
