About book E Gli Ippopotami Si Sono Lessati Nelle Loro Vasche (2008)
The characters in these Beat novels are all such criminals, it's so funny! The dialogue of Kerouac and Burroughs is entirely believable and I enjoyed the similarities and contrasts of today with 1940's New York. Kerouac does outwrite Burroughs, he has a bit more depth and Burroughs comes across a little stilted. The Afterword, where the work is put in its factual context, is probably the most interesting part though. This was great! A fast read, only a little over 200 pages including the afterword written by Burroughs' longtime friend. I watched the film "Kill Your Darlings" last week and it really affected me. I barely knew anything about the Beat Generation; I bought "On the Road" a couple years ago and lost interest after the first 30 pages, and I read "Howl" after seeing it on "Gilmore Girls" and while I really liked it, a lot of the meaning was lost on me. So watching that movie was very surprising and informative. I went to B&N to find books to help me learn more about it and I saw this one with the other Kerouac books and thought, "perfect!"The straightforward writing style has never been my favorite; I'm much more drawn to lyrically written books, like "Dandelion Wine." I usually find this kind of book dull, but for some reason, this time around I found the writing style fascinating, possessive of its own kind of profundity. And certainly what made this novel so exciting was its connection with the movie, as a tale of something that really happened to these people in which the reader has to figure out which person is supposed to be who, how events have been altered, what contains a grain of truth; and putting together this puzzle is so much fun (much like Lauren Conrad's books). I highly recommend reading this after watching the movie.
