About book Dziwna Sprawa Skaczącego Jacka (2012)

All in all a fun and very entertaining book. For sure, it's a bit too long at times, some dialogues are quite simple and annoying (especially towards the end, where they seem rushed) and, the bizarre devices and organic-machines that are some characters are well over the top if not ridiculous! But... But, using the Spring Heeled Jack (a Victorian boogeyman) as the backbone to the whole story reveals itself to be quite imaginative and creative. I won't reveal more so as to don't be a spoiler, but in the end the whole world created here falls into place and it's a great touch! Plus, wandering among such a gallery of characters (Burton, Swinburne, Darwin, Galton, Florence Nightingale, Isambard Brunel, Oscar Wilde etc.!) is a fun pleasure, even if great liberties are taken with their biographies and persona! In short, here's the kind of steampunk novel that doesn't take itself too seriously but, remains a very entertaining page turner up to the very final sentence... I'll pick the following tomes if I put my hands on them! Three and a half stars? I think it was the moment that the novel revealed two noted Victorian sages combined together into one giant robot that I realized I was really enjoying this--if you're going to do alternate histories, why not make them totally insane? I note mildly and in passing that it is possible to imagine a Victorian England where men may be grafted into the giant apes, but not really one where women do anything other than have their clothes torn off (or the backs of their heads explode, I suppose.) I also thought Swinburne was kind of a pill.

Great world, interesting characters and a plot that actually helps a sense of confusion and urgency.
