4.5 starsDudleytown tells us about the adventure shared by three college students trying to reach their home for a long weekend. When Ricky suggests taking a shortcut home across the wild mountains of Connecticut, which will take them through the dammed ghost town of Dudleytown, first year student Alexander Strauss freaks out. He’s been terrified of the place all his life. But to keep face in front of his sophomore roommate, and secret crush, Shannon, he shuts up and hopes for the best. All his fears are surpassed when they go through a series of calamities: they run over an unlikely pedestrian, suffer a car crash and must find a concussed and injured Ricky in the dark. But all this is not as unsettling as being stranded with Shannon … and getting the impression that he somehow shares Alex’s feelings, or at least is attracted to him, if the boner Shannon is sporting is to be taken into account. Is it true? Or is it only a side effect of the maddening influence the place seems to have on people? Anyhow, what’s a young man to do… All L.B. Gregg books I’ve read so far have a characteristic humour underlying the entire story which makes them really enjoyable. This story reminds me of those crazy road movies with touches of the B-movies Alex keeps recalling through their psychedelic night. The three boys are likeable, but Allie and Shannon are specially endearing, both in their unique way: Allie with his shy and thoughtful personality, and Shannon in that very attractive tough but kind sort of guy. The story develops fast and is action-packed, and the rhythm almost frantic (very much like their journey through the mountains). Luckily it was a short one, because I could not put it down.I feel comfortable recommending L.B.Gregg’s. I’m so sure everybody must like them, if not as much as I do, enough to consider them worth the time. Oh mein Gott!!

Excessively convoluted plot for a short story.
